The Evolution of Thulani Mbenge

On Saturday 23 June 2018 at a tournament organized by Golden Gloves in Emperors Palace. South Africa added yet another world champion to its rising list of champions, where Thulani “Evolution” Mbenge stopped Veteran Diego Chavez in round seven to claim the vacant IBO Welterweight World title. Thulani now joins six other South African boxers in the male World domination podium as world champions, Hekkie Butler, Zolani Tete, Gideon Buthelezi, Simphiwe Khonco, Xolisani Ndongeni and his fellow stablemate Kevin Lerena as a second world champion under the tutelage of the Smiths gym based in Cedar Park four ways.

Thulani “Evolution” Mbenge is indeed one of the most charismatic champions we have in the country currently. This was by far his best performance, he truly showed maturity and the ring generalship from the first round till the end. He frustrated his boxer with his jab and left hook, to a point where Diego had to be warned for biting him on his left shoulder.

From a helicopter perspective, this gave Diego the mindset that Mbenge only masters using his left hand, which psychologically made Diego to only guard against the left hook, by lifting his right gut up, safeguarding himself from Thulz left hook. leaving his left guard down, which was an invitation of the over right hand from Mbenge. Which then sent Diego to the canvas and then put a full stop to the match. This gave birth to the new South African Welterweight World Champion Thulani “Thulz, Evolution” Mbenge.

The overall bill was truly a night of the Smiths Bombs away, seeing that the tournament itself was titled “Bombs away”. It started with Ayabonga “jay jay” Sonjica fighting in the featherweight division, also trained by the Smiths brothers winning via TKO against Tumelo Matsane. The second bout we witnessed a fight in the middleweight division with Wade Groth winning on a majority point’s decision against Andile Mntungwa. The third bout we were again reassured that Smiths gym is capable of mixing a chemical which produces Bombs, this was all evident when they won 98% on a KO ratio. This bout was an international bout in the super middleweight division where Rowan Campbell from South Africa won on round eight via TKO against Malkhaz Sujashvili from Georgia. The main Supporting bout was a great comeback for Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu winning on round seven via TKO against Richard “Lion” Bolotnik of Ukraine.

On behalf of Boxing South Africa congratulations to all the boxers who won on the night and our new world champion Thulani “Thulz, Evolution” Mbenge and the team we are proud of you guys.
